Ferdinand E. Marcos
erdinand Marcos was born in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte on September 11, 1917 to Mariano Marcos and Josefa Edralin. He completed his law studies at the University of the Philippines in 1938 and became a bar topnotcher.

Marcos fought during the 2nd World War and was one of those who participated in the "Death March." He was elected congressman of Ilocos Norte in 1949 and became a senator in 1959 where he later assumed the position of president of the Philippine senate.

Marcos was elected president of the country in 1965. Initially, he had a good record as president and the Filipinos expected him to be one of the best. However, conditions changed in later years and his popularity with the people started diminishing. In his desire to remain in power, Marcos declared Martial Law in Sept. 21, 1972 and many of his political rivals were imprisoned. This apparently led to the beginning of his dictatorial rule of the country.

During the "People's Revolution" in Feb. 25, 1986, Marcos was toppled as president and fled in exile to Hawaii. He later died in Hawaii in Sept. 28, 1989.

Marcos was married to the former Imelda Romualdez.
