GARDEN GATE

Gardens For Kids is a non-profit organization formed in 1992 to offer inner-city school children, in the Los Angeles area, a chance to learn about science, the environment and career opportunities through gardening.

The late Dr. Mildred E. Mathias, Professor Emeritus of Botany at UCLA, was the founding President of Garden For Kids. Her many years of experience in plant science and the development of non-profit organizations gave Gardens For Kids a strong foundation.

Flower Garden

In many communities of Los Angeles, children have few opportunities to interact with the natural environment. For many urban youth, "nature" is represented by an isolated field trip.

With help from Gardens For Kids, elementary schoolyard blacktop is giving way to trees, shrubs and gardens of vegetables and flowers in a park-like, child-friendly environment. For older students, Gardens For Kids is helping create a disciplined area where the youth are learning skills that for some will become the foundation for life-long hobbies and for others, the path to a variety of career opportunities.
