1997

Achievement Day 1997 was held at the Brookshaven Community Hall in Dutch Brook, Nova Scotia, on July 9. Rising Sun 4-H invited the Grand Mira 4-H to share Achievement Day. A great time was had by all. Potluck supper followed radio and television interviews, and a couple of hours of Karaoke donated by Vince's Karaoke.

CBC Radio's Hal Higgins did a wonderful piece on 4-H the day after Achievement Day on CBC "Mainstreet," and another piece on Marion MacKinnon on "Information Morning" the following Monday. Thanx Hal !

More great, positive public awareness for 4-H was done by ATV news who chose Marion MacKinnon as "Maritimer of the Week" which was aired on Friday, July 11. Thanx Randy & Gary ! Marion MacKinnon, the General Leader of the Grand Mira 4-H Club, has been active in 4-H as a Leader for 65 years.
Two of our club members attended Camp Rankin from July 20-26 this summer. Diane and Ashley Morrison had a great time on the shore of the Bras d'Or with other 4-Hers from Cape Breton and Antigonish. They were taught some of the history of 4-H in Nova Scotia and of Camp Rankin, they learned to sing 4-H Grace and were kept busy from 7am 'til 10pm when it was lights out -- and we were told they weren't even allowed to whisper after 10pm!
Rising Sun 4-Hers worked the Cape Breton Kennel Club Dog Show again this year. Scooping poop and manning the door and gate and fundraising for 4-H were all part of the duties carried out by these members.


Annual Public Speaking Rally was held at the First United Church Hall in Louisbourg; participation and attendance were excellent.

LEARN TO DO BY DOING!




On May 31st at the Grand Mira Hall we had a Roast to honor Marion MacKinnon for her 65 years' dedication to the 4-H program. It takes a very special person to donate that much of their time and life to an organization. Marion is a true role model for all of us.


In January 1997, Jennifer Morrison was informed that she was awarded second place in the POP! Protecting Our Planet, 1996 Great Canadian Eco-Search, a national competition.
