| In 1996, led by their President, Jennifer Morrison, the members and leaders of the Rising Sun 4-H spearheaded a letter-writing campaign to the Federal Minister of Environment who, at the time, was Sergio Marchi, to protest the burial of the Sydney Tar Ponds and coke ovens -- otherwise known as Canada's largest toxic waste site -- to see the mess for himself. On August 12, 1996, Sergio Marchi visited the site and the Joint Action Group on Environmental Cleanup of the Muggah Creek Watershed was formed. The Rising Sun 4-H Achievers also hosted Elizabeth May, Executive Director, Sierra Club of Canada at a Public Forum held at the Steelworkers' Hall in Sydney, NS. As a result of this forum, the Sierra Club, Cape Breton was formed Jennifer was the lead-in speaker for the evening and talked about "The Monster Among Us", a speech she prepared for a 4-H Public Speaking competition earlier in the year. For all her environmental efforts, Jennifer was nominated for the POP! Protecting Our Planet Environmental Award, sponsored by Canada Trust -- a national competition in which she took 2nd place. July 9, 1996 Achievement Day was held at the Mira Community Pasture. Supper consisted of a cornboil, chili and barbecued hamburgers and hotdogs. The Sons of Membertou and Kiju Kawi shared our day with us again, and after supper they sang and drummed. We were going to have a bonfire and pop corn over the fire, and sing songs, but rain put a damper on those plans. Some other year, hopefully. |
