This is the rubbish chute. All the rubbish and dirty straw would be brushed down into the moat far below. Rubbish could be found just floating in the moat and if you drank any of the water you would probably DIE! When the castle was under siege a soldier would have been told to swim the moat and climb up this chute to gain entrance to the castle.
