The Triassic Period

245-208 Million Years Ago
First Dinosaurs

Triassoc Period

There were no dinosaurs at the beginning of this period, but there were many amphibians and some reptiles. There was only one large continent calld

Pangaea

. In the mid-Triassic period, dinosaurs evolved from the thecodonts, where were socket-toothed, crocodile-like reptiles.

The first dinosaurs were small & lightly built, mostly about 10-15 feet. They were carnivores or omnivores, and probably very fast.

The climate during this period was generally hot & dry, with strong seasonality. The formation of the supercontinet of Pangaea at the beginning of the period, 220 million years ago, decreased the amount of shoreline, formed mountains, and gave the interior of the supercontinent a dry, desert-like terrain.

Dinosaurs of the Triassic Period

  • Ceratosaurus
  • Dilophosaurus
