Bike Safety
G'day all! I'm Nick, and EF
Kewl Kid. I want to talk to you about bike safety. At the moment, in the
Northern Hemisphere, it's Summer time. That's a great time to be out riding
your bike. But, you have to be careful. You have to remember that there
are other vehicles on the road, like you. Things like cars, trucks and
buses are all driving around you. How can you be safe on the road?
First off, when you're on the road, obey all the traffic rules. Just cause your bike doesn't have four wheels and a motor, doesn't mean it's exempt from the road rules.
Second, make sure you're wearing your good fitting, strapped, helmet. You should also make sure it isn't damaged in any way. If it is damaged and you crash, it isn't going to save you and could cause even more injury.
Third, make sure you signal when turning. This is to let the other drivers know you're turning, so they can steer around you.
Fourth, make sure you are riding with the flow of traffic. Keep to the right (left in some countries like Australia) side of the road so that you don't crash head on with another vehicle.
Fifth, if you're riding at night, make sure you're wearing light colored clothes so that you can be seen on the road. Dark clothes will not be noticed, and could cause another vehicle to crash into you.
And Sixth, if a bike lane
is present, use it! Remember, KewlKids are bike smart kids!
