Romania and Ukraine

Romania

Moshe Spitzer was born in Galati, came to the US and then went back to Galati. Galati was formerly known as Galatz. Apparently a significant number of Jews from Galati settled in Key West, Florida, including Marie Rosenzwaig Spitzer and her second husband Mandel Rippa for a while. Most Romanian Jews were killed during WWII and most of the rest left under communist rule, only about 1000 or so remain.

Ukraine

The Narvis and Stepansky families were origianally from Korets, which is about 140 miles west of Kiev, in the gubernia of Volhynia. At some point they moved (likely by Czarist decree) to the larger town of Novograd-Volynskiy (also known as Zhvil), about 25 miles east. The Jewish population of Korets was placed in a ghetto in 1942 and destroyed during the holocaust.
