Butterflies

Online Activities for Junior Classes.

 

Native American legends say, if you have a secret wish,
capture a butterfly and whisper your wish in its ear.
Release the butterfly, and it will carry your wish
to the Great Spirit, where it will surely come true.

Activity One.

We are going to be learning about Butterflies. To start our study print out and read the story below.

The Wings of the Butterfly: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest.

Grow some swan plant seeds in small pots or purchase one from a garden centre.

In spring watch carefully for the monarch butterflies to appear and lay some eggs.

They will lay them on the underside of the leaf.

As soon as the eggs are laid make a timeline.

Watch the eggs carefully and write the date and record observations on the time line.

Learn the parts of a butterfly, print out a butterfly picture and label it.

You will need to take a look at Butterfly Anatomy

Include your print out in a "Butterfly Booklet."

Activity Three.

Take a look at the Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly.

You will need to click on the links (The Egg, Larva, Pupa and Adult) which are across the top of the page.

Print and colour a Life Cycle worksheet. Include it in your booklet.

Activity Four.

Learning how to follow instructions.

Go to

Where Do Butterflies Come From?

Print out the page and follow the instructions to make a butterfly.

You can make your own butterfly or you could work with a friend.

Activity Five.

Butterflies are Symmetrical. Go here to find out about

Symmetry. Use the print out you will find and make your own balancing butterfly.

Take a walk outside to find things that are symmetrical. Draw pictures of the symmetrical things you found.

Make a chart and post your pictures on it.

Activity Six.

Make a chart about butteflies.

Print out the butterfly life cycle pictures on this page.

Carefully colour them and cut them out.

Present the pictures in the correct sequence on your chart.

Write some factual captions for your pictures.

Activity Seven.

Butterfly Art - Flying High.

Click the Art and Craft link and go to Lessons 10 to 18. Find "Flying High."

Print out the pages and display. Follow the instructions.

Write a story about your special butterfly.

Choose which quiz you are going to take and print it out.
