Hello from Mrs Nichol.
I am a teacher at Hikutaia School. My husband is a
dairy farmer.We have 400 cows that are milked through a 30 a-side
herringbone cowshed. All our cows will be dry by Saturday. That means
they will not be giving any more milk till they have their calves in
July. From May until July is a quieter time for the busy farmer. We
will have to buy our milk in town until then.
From Chloe.
We have got Jerseys and Fresian cows on our farm.
On Sunday Dad put up a fence and we
fed out hay and then we went to get the cows. We have 3 sets of cows.
There are Fresians and Jerseys. I drive the
motor bike and the trailer had 10 bales of hay
on it.
Molly the dog sat on the trailer.
We found same caterpillars in the grass where the cows were. They were
different to the school's ones. They were orange on their backs. One
got on my back. It was only little. I let it go. It was small.
From
Danielle.
I help my Dad milk the cows and I help him spray
the teats and some times the cows kick. Dad smacks the cows and when
we try to push them up into the bail they won't go up so dad has to
walk right around the cows and push them up again.

I am going to cross country and I like running. I
am going to soccer. I like helping Dad milk the cows. We have 200
Jersey cows. They are light yellowy brown. The tanker comes and takes
the milk to the factory. The cream gets taken out and the milk gets
put in to containers and it goes to the shops.
From
Glenn.
My Dad feeds out the silage by the fork. The cows
like the silage. Dads cows are having their calves
From Emma.
I have five chickens
and we feed them pellets and we feed them food
scraps.
From Hilary.
My Guinea pig had a baby.
(Not like this one!) I have named it Cuddles so now I
have got three guinea pigs. My guinea pigs don't have tails. The
mother guinea pig is called Nibbles and the father is called
Blacky. Cuddles is cute. This morning we missed the bus so my Dad
took me down to the river that has a big bridge and then the bus came
and picked us up.
From
Nakita.
I help my Uncle on the farm sometimes and we feed
the calves. Some baby pigs are pink
and
are small. Calves are like cows but calves are small.
From Joshua.
On Saturday I went to soccer. The other Saturday we
lost. We got one point. The other team got two points then we went up
the hill to get a drink of juice
and
then we went home. This Saturday I am going to try and win a
game.
Mum and I went to town. Mum got me shoes and socks
and mum bought me some hand cuffs with a key. We went home.
From
Kristy.
I help my Grandad feed the silage to the deer. I
think he has 100 deer. The fences are high electric ones. He feeds
the deer hay and they eat maize and sometimes they eat grass. He has
some sheep too.
My sheep is at
Grandads.
From Ashley.
Mac the dog has big sores on his back. Bruce the
vet gave us some tablets so he will get better.
From Mrs
Crawford.
When I was little my family had "house" cows.
These were two cows my Dad kept so we could have milk for our
family. My brothers and I used to milk them by hand. The cows would
just stand still in the paddock. I would sit on a small box and put
the bucket under the udder. First I would wash the teats and then
squeeze out the warm milk. It is nice to lay your head against the
cows warm side on cold mornings! Sometimes my brother and I would
have milk fights. We would squirt each other with milk straight from
the cows teats. Our cows were called Darky and Squibby.
