The following play was made up by the children in
Room Five after reading the story "A Lion in the Meadow" We had more
than one reader. You will need to add in Reader One, Reader Two etc
if you use this as a print out.
A Lion in the Meadow.
Characters.
Lion
Boy
Mother
Reader
Setting. A kitchen.
Mother is busy peeling potatoes. There is a large broom cupboard in
the corner of the room.
(Boy comes running in.)
Boy. Mother, there
is a Lion in the meadow.
Mother. Nonsense
little boy.
Boy. There is a big,
roaring, whiskery lion in the meadow.
Mother. Nonsense
little boy. You are making up stories again. Go in to the meadow and
look for yourself.
Boy. I am too scared
to go because of the Lion.
Mother. Nonsense
little boy. Take this match box in to the meadow and open it up. A
little dragon will come out and it will grow. The dragon will scare
the lion away.
Reader. So the
little boy took the match box and went away.
The Mother went on peeling potatoes.
Suddenly the door opened.
In rushed a big roaring, yellow, whiskery
lion.
Lion. Hide me. A dragon is after me.
Reader. The lion hid
in the broom cupboard.
(Little boy runs in)
Little Boy. Mother,
that dragon grew too big. There is no lion in the meadow now. There's
a dragon in the meadow.I am going to hide in the broom
cupboard.
(Boy hides in broom cupboard with the Lion)
Lion. Hello little
boy.
Boy. Hello
lion.
Lion. You should
have left me alone. I only eat apples.
(Mother opens the cupboard.)
Mother. There wasn't
a real dragon. It was just a story I made up.
Boy.It turned out to
be true after all. You should have looked in the match box
first.
Lion. That's how it
is. Some stories are true and some aren't. Let's go and play in the
meadow on the other side of the house. There is no dragon
there.
Little Boy. I am
glad we are friends now.
