Types of Buses

Here are just a few of the types of buses you may see on the road.

Here is the type I drive. It is called a transit bus. Some say a "flat-nose" bus. The engine of my bus is under the front, but some are in the back. These are sometimes called "pushers". My bus is an 84 passenger bus, a big one. Others in our fleet hold 72 passengers and are not quite as big. If you go to the city, or have regional transit service, you will see this type of bus, but it will not be yellow and the seats are arranged differently for passengers.

This is called a conventional bus. I have driven quite a few of these. The engine is out in front like a car or a truck. They can be various sizes. Most in our fleet are 64 passenger buses. You may have seen this type of bus carrying railroad workers, sometimes painted blue.

This is a mini-bus. It is also a conventional bus. It's smaller than the 64 passenger and sometimes is modified with a lift on the side for wheelchairs. Any size or type of bus may be fitted with a lift. We have one bus that holds several wheel chairs and is only fitted with seats toward the front of the bus.

My husband calls this a baby bus. It's so tiny! It is made like a van but with a bus body on the frame. It only holds a few children but can go right up into driveways. This is very important for special needs children that have a difficult time getting around.

Sometimes you will see old buses on the road that are not yellow. They have been sold from the school district and are used by other organizations like church groups and other programs. People have taken old buses and made them into family campers. Some private schools have buses that are only for transporting sports teams and not for pick up and drop off on the road. They may be painted school colors rather than schoolbus yellow because they are just another vehicle on the road and you do not stop for them.
