The only way to solve the ocean problem is to reverse what we’ve done. Naturalist Aldo Leopold once said “it would take laws, education, and compassion to save our wildlife.” Also, most scientists agree that it will take a combination of ecosystem restoration and protected areas to bring back a species. This is exactly what is being done. Marine scientists and some commercial fishers are trying to get new marine reserves to protect our ocean. At the moment only 1% of U.S. waters are protected. Virtually nothing is stopping fishers from wiping out the entire ocean population. In the Florida Keys they are taking no chances with their marine wildlife. They have begun the Florida Keys’ Particularly Sensitive Sea Area program. This keeps big ships out of areas where coral reefs are found. Ships longer than 164 ft must avoid certain areas of the protected zone altogether, and all ships are not allowed to anchor in three spots. There are only four nautical or marine zones in the world that have this type of protected status. This is the first nautical zone in the U.S. to get international protection.
