| Part 2 September 2000 Nacedo turned north on 285 headed towards Roswell. He glanced over at the brunette sitting next to him before looking back at the road. She was stone faced with anger. “Don’t worry so much, Liz, you’ll fit in fine,” Nacedo said. “Why do we have move again?” she replied, throwing an angry look his way. “Come on, Liz, it’ll be fun," he replied. “I know for a fact you’ll meet some new friends,” he added with a knowing smile, although his eyes were pained. “I’ve never fit in anywhere else, why would it be any different here?” she whispered. Liz hated to act like a child but sometimes she couldn’t help it. They’d moved around so much she had boxes she just didn’t bother unpacking anymore. And it was never any different. She was always an outcast. “Just trust me on this,” he said firmly. She leaned her head on her hand and looked back out the window. Nacedo sighed and turned his eyes back on the road. He hadn’t told Liz about her alien status. She didn’t know that others like her were in Roswell, waiting to find out the answers to all their questions. Liz didn’t have any idea about her origins. Her powers were weak, no doubt because she’d spent so little time in the pod. Nacedo still cursed himself for not getting Sheila Hubble’s sample earlier. When Atherton had warned her and she promptly changed her name and went into hiding. If it weren’t for the newspaper article announcing her marriage to Hubble, he would have never found her. Taking care of Liz over the years had created a soft spot in him, a fatherly side he’d never expected. He tried to curse humans for creating these emotions, but one look at the girl next to him and he found himself thankful for coming to Earth. And watching her grow up in so much pain and confusion hurt him. For years he had wanted to teach her powers, to let her know who she really was, but he always stopped himself. He knew that once he told her he would have to take her to the others and that he would have to give her up. And he wasn’t ready to do it. He wasn’t ready to let Liz leave him for her true family, the Royal Family. He was being selfish, yet another human habit. Sure she’d used powers accidentally at times. She tried to hide them, even from him. She thought she was a freak for being different. This was why she never fit in and was often picked on by peers at school. Because her powers would activate and they would run from her, calling her spiteful names and playing pranks. One time a boy had spiked her juice with chili peppers. And when she drank it, she smiled and guzzled it down. He’d called her a freak in front of everyone and told them what she’d just drank. Liz turned beet red and tried to run from the laughing students and pointing fingers. When the boy blocked her way, preventing her escape, she lost control and he went flying across the room with just a flick of her wrist. Liz and Nacedo moved soon after that, after Nacedo had paid the boy a visit. But now he had no choice but to take Liz to the others. They had to begin preparing. It was almost time to use the orbs and learn about their Destiny. And Nacedo couldn’t put the truth off much longer. |
