Director / Hamm: Robert Moore

Dr. Robert Moore was faced with a unique challenge when electing to mount a production of Endgame. He both acts and directs in the play, which can be challenging at times. He must divide his focus between two significant roles, but when asked about this ambition he accredited the experience and commitment of the cast and crew with helping to relieve any potential problems. He grew up in Hamilton, Ontario and attended McMaster University. Dr. Moore majored in English, more specifically American postmodernism, and became a professor because it was a more reliable source of income than acting. In his spare time he rides his motorcycle, raises his children, writes poetry and counts his blessings.

He strongly believes that Samuel Beckett’s Endgame is one of the three or four greatest plays every written and hopes that this production serves the text in the best manner possible. Dr. Moore has played Hamm previously during his university days, but now that he is older and “much closer to death” he can better appreciate Hamm’s circumstance. Dr. Moore sums up this predicament as “having to deal with the inevitability of his own demise, and the problem of making sense out of life in a universe that may well be bereft of meaning.”

When asked what message he hoped the audience would depart the production with, he asked that the audience not try to find the “message” in Endgame. Dr. Moore stresses that Endgame does not have a message. By the end of the play the audience will hopefully have laughed and looked into the abyss. Dr. Moore states that, “While this is a rather odd position to be put in, this is what the play provides you with.” To sum up the play in one sentence Dr Moore highlights one of Hamm’s observations, “ Moments for nothing, now as always. Time was never and time is now over.”

Clov: Scott Shannon

Scott Shannon, who was cast as Clov in this production of Endgame graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton with a double major in English and philosophy. He grew up in Quispamsis and attended UNBSJ before moving to Fredericton where he now works as a Library Assistant managing electronic journals and working in the cataloguing department. He can relate to the character of Clov as he sometimes feels the forces of the universe are against him, and wants the audience to recognize that the characters in Endgame live in a sad world.

Nell: Alicia McLaughlin

Alicia McLaughin, who plays Nell in UNBSJ'S Lorenzo society and NASTY Shadows Theatre Company’s production of Endgame, grew up in Bloomfield, New Brunswick. She attended the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, before transferring to its sister campus in Fredericton. Alicia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, major in English and a Bachelor of Education. She is currently an Assistant Education Director at the Sylvan Learning Center in Fredericton and in her spare times enjoys reading and spending time with her family. When asked what she would like the audience to know about this play before watching it, she responded, “these characters live in a very sad world.”

Nag: Chris Stacey

Chris Stacey, a native of Hampton, New Brunswick, plays the part of Nag in Endgame. Chris earned a Bachelor of Arts degree (English drama) from UNBSJ and a Bachelor of Education (secondary literature) degree from UNB. This avid English enthusiast, who “loves the power and beauty of the language”, is currently an English teacher at St. Malachy’s High School. In his spare time, Chris enjoys reading, running, playing guitar and traveling. As an added incentive to participating in such a unique theatrical performance, Chris was given the opportunity to act alongside his friends, with whom he loves performing. Chris feels that this production of Endgame is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a type theatre that is rarely seen in this city, and that the audience will find this production interesting even if they do not know anything about the play.

Christina Pickford: Stage Manager

Christina Pickford was born in Cape Breton, but grew up in the Kennebecasis Valley where she graduated high school in 1999. She is currently attending the University of New Brunswick in Saint John enrolled in a consecutive Bachelor of Arts and Education. Christina has prior experience as a stage manager with The Laramie Project and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead for the Lorenzo Society.  When she is not working in the instructional technology department on campus or teaching drama classes to children, she enjoys reading, listening to music and spending time with friends and family. Although the play opens earlier than anticipated for the cast and crew, Christina feels they have worked hard to meet time demands and she hopes the audience will enjoy this production of Endgame
