Notes for John W. "Keghead" Back:
John served for three and one-half years in the Confederate Army. He enlisted on 10/21/1861 in West Liberty, KY, when the 5th Kentucky Infantry (CSA) was organizing to hold a route from central Kentucky through Prestonburg to the southeast. He re-enlisted in Jackson, KY, on 9/11/1862. John was promoted in July 1863 to First Corporal. After wintering in western Virginia, 1862-63, the 5th Kentucky was ordered to Tennessee and participated in the Battle of Chickamauga, 19/20 September 1863. John was wounded in Dallas, GA, on 5/8/1864. His record states that "he took part in all the operations and engagements of his Company (H) when he was not disabled by wounds."

Notes for Lewis Cecil "Scamp" Back:
Lewis enlisted in the Confederate Army on 9/11/1862, Company B, 5th Kentucky Infantry, Regiment 11 (with his brother John). In 1914, Lewis' pension application stated that he served until the end of the war, surrendering with his company in May 1865 in Louisa, KY. His service was verified by an affidavit from his first cousin, Isaac Back.

Notes for Barnabas A. "Barney" Back:
Barney and Minerva lived in the Seitz area of Morgan County, KY, which became part of Magoffin County in February 1860. Barney owned only a few cattle and hogs, and a horse (or mule) or two in 1858/59.
Their home was lost in a lawsuit settlement dated 25 April 1869, Daniel Gullet vs. Lewis Back. Barney A. Back promised to pay $650.87, plus six percent interest, to John W. Hazelrigg (Commissioner of the Court) for land. Isaac Back co-signed. Apparently Barney did not pay, because Lewis Patrick had him put out by writ of forceable entry, sometime before October 1872. The house that was lost was a one-story log home with a dug well that was 75 feet deep. A modern house stands on the site, where the Paddle and Spruce Pine enter the Right Middle Fork.
