Ballade for violin and orchestra, Op.4a

Enescu's Balade for violin and orchestra dates from 1895, and the 14 year old himself would almost certainly have been the soloist at the first performance at the Paris Conservatory. It is somewhat Brahmsian in stamp: a nobly beautiful theme is first adumbrated by the strings of the orchestra before entry of the solo violin, who thereafter fully dominates this rather short study, which heralds a beautiful extension of the theme. A more dramatic, contrasting passage is briefly heard before the soloist sings the entire main theme in the highest register, which full and lyrical recapitulation brings this striking brief work to a close.

Enescu also made a version of the Ballade for violin and piano.
