| Up ahead is a plateau.
At the far end you see a great peak rising even higher. Directly
in front of you is a rickety bridge. You cross, and come to a sign:
You enter a small castle with large windows overlooking the plateau and the volcano far away to the southeast. "Hi," says the guy in the funny hat and uniform, "I'm Ranger Pete. Welcome to the Volcano Land Visitor Center. Volcano Land is a safe and fun place for the whole family." "Has anyone died from the volcano?" you ask. "It's been over 23 days since our last volcano-related fatality." "How many people died then?" "All of them." You notice the volcano is beginning to belch thick, black smoke. You point and ask, "Is that something we should be concerned about?" "Oh no, not at all. Very rarely. Hardly ever." Suddenly the ground shakes violently beneath you. "Unless that happens," says Ranger Pete. "Then we're going to have a violent eruption within the day. Say, would you like a brochure?" You decide to leave Volcano Land as promptly as possible. You race out of the Visitor Center -- only to discover that the earthquake has destroyed the bridge. "I've got to find another way out of here!" you say. You head south, into a forest vale. |
