Jan
Melia and Oli started music in the mid 1990's, songwriting and busking then
recording 'frank', 'fashion guru' and 'the homegrown tapes'......soon they teamed
up various buskers around Derry including Tom, Matt, Davy, Dave and Fiona to
form Bellybutton, a ska based rock band and record the album 'bellybutton',
after disbanding only Tom Watkiss, the prison blues guitar guy remained and
Engine W Fader were born and the threesome recorded 'yellow', 'live in giros'
and 'them' and played various arts and blues clubs during a 2 and a half year
spell appearing regularily with 'a bunch of chancers' poetry collective. Jan
Melia won the best performance prize at the Belfast Literary Festival in 1999
and Engine W Fader were awarded the irish organic award for music.
in
2000 Tom went his own way and Jan Melia and Oli went to Belfast , following
a year of duo performances they happened upon an punk drummer Petesy Burns
and set upon the recording of 'sunglasses and a mixing desk' a mixture of
duets and beat supported songs. During the autumn of 2001 Oli met up with
a keyboard wizard Iain McCurdy and the group changed from Engine W Fader to
the simplified EWF. There now followed 4 years of intense gigging, another
organic award for music and the recording of 'pineapple chunks' and 'whiteman
who would be god' 2 albums that mixed jazzy blues with up tempo funk.
