David James
Action Images

It seems the West Ham ‘keeper will never be able to live down the ‘Calamity James’ tag, despite another terrific season in the Premiership. James was superb week-in week-out for the Hammers during the 2001/02 term, though it is his occasional clanger that makes the papers. Irons fans will appreciate James’ brilliant shot-stopping capabilities, as the ‘keeper played a huge part in their impressive league campaign.

Nigel Martyn
Action Images

Nigel Martyn has been the heir apparent to David Seaman for as long as he can remember. The Arsenal veteran's reluctance to retire has ended the Leeds United goalkeeper's hopes of a decent stint between the sticks for his country, but he rarely lets England down when called upon. In fact, Martyn's key saves against Greece in the final qualifier averted the threat of a play-off and cemented his place as England's No.2. If injury befalls Seaman in Japan and Korea, Sven Goran Eriksson can rely on Martyn.

David Seaman
Action Images
Player stats

David Seaman will be 38 when the World Cup kicks into gear, and many critics believe he should be watching the finals on television, wearing slippers and sipping milky tea. The Arsenal veteran is liable to go down in instalments at times with his most agile days behind him, but he remains a reliable force in goal for his country. Seaman continues to command his penalty area, his positioning is second to none, and his experience of major tournaments will hold England in good stead in the Far East.

David Beckham

Player stats

David Beckham returned from France '98 as public enemy No.1, but the Manchester United star heads for the Far East at the peak of his powers. Since assuming the captaincy, Beckham's game has scaled new heights. His passing, industry and dead-ball expertise are well documented, but his leadership qualities and eye for goal have also come to the fore under Sven Goran Eriksson. It was Beckham's last-gasp free kick which sent England to the finals, and his contributions will be crucial to their hopes of progressing to the latter stages of the tournament.

Wayne Bridge
Action Images
Player stats

One of the few players outside of the Premiership’s major clubs to get a look-in at international level, Southampton’s Wayne Bridge is a left-back growing in stature. Bridge is skilled when going forward, and, unlike other left-backs, is consummate when tracking back. The transition from club level to the international stage has proved to be fairly seamless so far, so it will be interesting to see how he copes in the Far East if given the chance.

Wes Brown
Action Images

There is no denying Brown's talent as centre back, and since bursting onto the scene for Manchester United in 1998, Brown has won many fans. He returned from a serious knee injury that ruled him out of the 1999/00 season, but bounced back admirably last term. The 2001/02 campaign has been a troublesome one for Brown, who has struggled to cope without Jaap Stam by his side. Brown and Laurent Blanc have looked far from assured this season, with individual errors arriving with unwanted regularity. For all Brown's class, he is below Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand in the England pecking order, and so will seemingly warm the bench with Martin Keown in the Far East.

Nicky Butt
Action Images
Player stats

Nicky Butt may well be in Sven Goran Eriksson's squad to travel to the Far East come summer time, but, like life at Old Trafford, first team chances could be few and far between. As an able box-to-box midfielder, Butt will play understudy to Liverpool's Steven Gerrard. Butt will be well aware that Gerrard's habit of picking up injuries could give him more games than he had first bargained for. Combative and competitive, Butt can always be relied upon to stir things up if need be. This can also prove to be his downfall, as the fiery-tempered midfielder is no stranger to the referee's notebook.

Sol Campbell
Action Images

Sol Campbell was touted as a potential England captain at the start of Sven Goran Eriksson's reign before his progress was stilted by injuries and a subsequent lack of games with new club Arsenal. However, he is to his best now and, with over 40 caps to his name, Campbell's experience of the 1998 World Cup in France will be invaluable to Eriksson's youthful squad. He lacks assurance on the ball, but there are few better natural defenders in the English game than Campbell and he is also a major threat at set pieces.

Ashley Cole
Action Images

Ashley Cole's meteoric rise has been a blessing for England, who have been handicapped for many years by a dearth of naturally left-sided players. In the space of one season, Cole eclipsed Brazil international Silvinho at Arsenal before establishing himself as Sven Goran Eriksson's first-choice left-back. His lack of experience is occasionally betrayed by poor positioning and reckless challenges, but Cole gives his club and country an extra dimension going forward. Cole's attacking strengths could yet see him deployed on the left of midfield where England still lack quality.

Joe Cole
Action Images

Joe Cole has been heralded as England’s ‘next big thing’ for over four years now, so perhaps the World Cup will give this skillfull West Ham midfielder his chance to shine. Despite the fact that he is yet to truly perform consistently in the Premiership, Cole is an exciting talent nonetheless. His one-the-ball trickery makes him a fan favourite, but whether he has the presence to dictate on the big stage remains to be seen. Will most likely fight it out with Kieron Dyer for that left-midfield spot.

Kieron Dyer
Action Images

Many expect Kieron Dyer to take the World Cup by storm, much in the same way Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne, David Platt and Michael Owen did before him. Dyer is an electrifying talent, with the ability to take his man on. This exciting midfielder, who came back from shin injuries to help Newcastle seal fourth spot in the Premiership, could be used on the left flank of midfield, with the other three spots already spoken for. Sven-Goran Eriksson played him there during the 4-0 friendly win over Paraguay, but Dyer was a disappointment, as he tried desperately to make an impact.

Rio Ferdinand
Action Images

Since moving from West Ham to Leeds United, Rio Ferdinand has grown in stature with club and country. Playing in a back four has improved his physical strength without sacrificing his composure on the ball and ability to read the game. The 23-year-old started every World Cup qualifier under Sven Goran Eriksson and the Swede's only quandry is who to play alongside Ferdinand in the Far East. The Leeds captain is still prone to the occasional error, but the World Cup experience will hold him in good stead for the future.

Robbie Fowler
Action Images

Robbie Fowler's image as a footballing anti-hero has won him praise and criticism in equal measure. The striker always seems to have some sort of personal crusade to deal with - be it trying to fight for his place for both club and country, or rise above irritating tabloid speculation. Fowler has been through quite a lot both on and off the pitch, and hopefully from now and up until the start of the summer he can make the papers for all the right reasons. When Fowler is on form, he's amazing and now, rejuvenated by his move to Leeds there is no telling what he can achieve in the Far East.

Owen Hargreaves
Action Images

Owen Hargreaves will have been on Sven-Goran Eriksson’s list of ‘maybes’ up until Gary Neville broke the metatarsal bone in his left foot. Hargreaves has been used in the right-back slot with club side Bayern Munich this season, and Eriksson could do worse than let this lively Canadian-born midfielder fill Neville’s boots. The floppy-fringed youngster goes to the Far East as Eriksson’s most capable utility man, and given England’s luck with injuries and suspensions, he can expect to get a run-out.

Emile Heskey
Action Images

Emile Heskey faces the same scrap with England as he does with Liverpool, as he and club-mate Robbie Fowler prepare to battle it out to claim the starting spot alongside Michael Owen at next year's World Cup finals. Heskey is an able target man, and he and Owen have proved to be a worthy partnership for both club and country. But the burly forward has really struggled for goals this season, and it just goes to show how important regular first-team football is to a striker. That said, Heskey has shown he can mix it with the finest defenders around, and is always a handful when given half a chance.

Martin Keown
Action Images

At the age of 35, the 2002 World Cup will be Martin Keown's swansong. Defensively, the Arsenal veteran is pretty much flawless - he is a fine man-to-man marker, is rarely beaten in the air and regularly saves the day with brave, last-ditch challenges. Keown's critics claim that he has lost a yard of pace in the twilight of his career, and he faces strong competition from the likes of Sol Campbell to make the starting line-up in Japan and Korea. However, Keown's leadership and experience could give him the edge when Sven Goran Eriksson picks his team.

Danny Mills
Action Images

Sven-Goran Eriksson obviously likes what he sees in Danny Mills, and, given the fact that first-choice right-back Gary Neville has already been ruled out of the World Cup, the Leeds defender will be confident of starting for England in the summer. Mills’ temperament has often been called into question for Leeds, and it’s little wonder given the 11 bookings and two red cards he received this season. Still, Mills is a capable and hard-working defender, and if that temper can be kept in check then he should get the chance to impress this summer.

Michael Owen

Player stats

David Beckham may be Golden Balls, but Michael Owen is certainly the golden boy. A hero for both Liverpool and England, he can seemingly do no wrong. The only down side for the young hot-shot is his tendency to pick up niggling injuries. That said, the world should beware next summer if Owen stays fit. Owen burst onto the international stage at France 98 with his wonder-goal against Argentina, and this was only bettered by his stunning hat-trick during the 5-1 annihilation against Germany in September. The sky is the limit for Owen.

Paul Scholes
Action Images

Paul Scholes has consistently delivered the goods for England, and has scored more than his fair share of crucial goals from midfield on the international stage. As of late, Scholes hasn't been able to reproduce the red-hot form that made him such a respected player for both club and country. Scholes and Steven Gerrard didn't have the greatest of games during England's 2-2 draw with Greece, but these two should be back on top form soon enough. One criticism at international level has been his tendency to get caught out of position up front and this was all too abvious at Euro 2000.

David Seaman will be 38 when the World Cup kicks into gear, and many critics believe he should be watching the finals on television, wearing slippers and sipping milky tea. Trevor Sinclair
Allsport

Trevor Sinclair may have flown to the Far East and back again prior to the World Cup kicking-off, but following the injury sustained to Liverpool's Danny Murphy, West Ham's left-sided midfielder finds himself in coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's final 23. Sinclair plays on the left week in week out at Upton Park, and Eriksson will bear this in mind when it comes to team selection. Sinclair was a disappointment during England's warm-up draw with South Korea, but faired better against Cameroon.

This mature centre-back is a veteran of England’s campaigns at Euro 96, World Cup 98 and Euro 2000. The English public will best remember him for missing a crucial penalty in 1996, but Southgate can always be depended upon at international level. The mild-mannered Southgate was a midfielder during his Crystal Palace days, but Southgate truly came to the fore when switched to defence. Southgate won his first England cap while at Aston Villa, but it his Riverside renaissance that threw him back into the international picture.

Darius Vassell

It takes many top strikers some time before they find their feet on the international stage, but Darius Vassell made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut. Vassell hit the equalizer against Holland in February, before bagging another England goal during April’s 4-0 win over Paraguay. Aston Villa coach Graham Taylor had opted to rest the pacy striker following his new-found international success, but Vassell is getting more first-team run outs as the season winds down.
