David Seaman
 |
Action Images
|
David Seaman will be 38 when the World Cup kicks into gear, and
many critics believe he should be watching the finals on television, wearing
slippers and sipping milky tea. The Arsenal veteran is liable to go down in
instalments at times with his most agile days behind him, but he remains a
reliable force in goal for his country. Seaman continues to command his penalty
area, his positioning is second to none, and his experience of major tournaments
will hold England in good stead in the Far East.

David Beckham
 |
Action Images
|
David Beckham returned from France '98 as public enemy No.1, but
the Manchester United star heads for the Far East at the peak of his powers.
Since assuming the captaincy, Beckham's game has scaled new heights. His
passing, industry and dead-ball expertise are well documented, but his
leadership qualities and eye for goal have also come to the fore under Sven
Goran Eriksson. It was Beckham's last-gasp free kick which sent England to the
finals, and his contributions will be crucial to their hopes of progressing to
the latter stages of the tournament.

Wayne Bridge
 |
Action Images
|
One of the few players outside of the Premiership’s major
clubs to get a look-in at international level, Southampton’s Wayne Bridge is a
left-back growing in stature. Bridge is skilled when going forward, and, unlike
other left-backs, is consummate when tracking back. The transition from club
level to the international stage has proved to be fairly seamless so far, so it
will be interesting to see how he copes in the Far East if given the chance.

Wes Brown
 |
Action Images
|
There is no denying Brown's talent as centre back, and
since bursting onto the scene for Manchester United in 1998, Brown has won
many fans. He returned from a serious knee injury that ruled him out of
the 1999/00 season, but bounced back admirably last term. The 2001/02
campaign has been a troublesome one for Brown, who has struggled to cope
without Jaap Stam by his side. Brown and Laurent Blanc have looked far
from assured this season, with individual errors arriving with unwanted
regularity. For all Brown's class, he is below Sol Campbell and Rio
Ferdinand in the England pecking order, and so will seemingly warm the
bench with Martin Keown in the Far East.

Nicky Butt
 |
Action Images
|
Nicky Butt may well be in Sven Goran Eriksson's squad to
travel to the Far East come summer time, but, like life at Old Trafford, first
team chances could be few and far between. As an able box-to-box midfielder,
Butt will play understudy to Liverpool's Steven Gerrard. Butt will be well
aware that Gerrard's habit of picking up injuries could give him more games
than he had first bargained for. Combative and competitive, Butt can always be
relied upon to stir things up if need be. This can also prove to be his
downfall, as the fiery-tempered midfielder is no stranger to the referee's
notebook.

Kieron Dyer
 |
Action Images
|
Many expect Kieron Dyer to take the World Cup by
storm, much in the same way Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne, David
Platt and Michael Owen did before him. Dyer is an electrifying
talent, with the ability to take his man on. This exciting
midfielder, who came back from shin injuries to help Newcastle
seal fourth spot in the Premiership, could be used on the left
flank of midfield, with the other three spots already spoken
for. Sven-Goran Eriksson played him there during the 4-0
friendly win over Paraguay, but Dyer was a disappointment, as he
tried desperately to make an impact.

Martin Keown
 |
Action Images
|
At the age of 35, the 2002 World Cup will
be Martin Keown's swansong. Defensively, the Arsenal
veteran is pretty much flawless - he is a fine man-to-man
marker, is rarely beaten in the air and regularly saves
the day with brave, last-ditch challenges. Keown's critics
claim that he has lost a yard of pace in the twilight of
his career, and he faces strong competition from the likes
of Sol Campbell to make the starting line-up in Japan and
Korea. However, Keown's leadership and experience could
give him the edge when Sven Goran Eriksson picks his team.

Danny Mills
 |
Action Images
|
Sven-Goran Eriksson obviously likes what
he sees in Danny Mills, and, given the fact that
first-choice right-back Gary Neville has already been
ruled out of the World Cup, the Leeds defender will be
confident of starting for England in the summer.
Mills’ temperament has often been called into question
for Leeds, and it’s little wonder given the 11
bookings and two red cards he received this season.
Still, Mills is a capable and hard-working defender, and
if that temper can be kept in check then he should get
the chance to impress this summer.

Michael Owen
 |
Action Images
|
David Beckham may be Golden Balls, but
Michael Owen is certainly the golden boy. A hero for both
Liverpool and England, he can seemingly do no wrong. The
only down side for the young hot-shot is his tendency to
pick up niggling injuries. That said, the world should
beware next summer if Owen stays fit. Owen burst onto the
international stage at France 98 with his wonder-goal
against Argentina, and this was only bettered by his
stunning hat-trick during the 5-1 annihilation against
Germany in September. The sky is the limit for Owen.

Gareth Southgate
 |
Action Images
|
This mature centre-back is a veteran
of England’s campaigns at Euro 96, World Cup 98 and
Euro 2000. The English public will best remember him
for missing a crucial penalty in 1996, but Southgate
can always be depended upon at international level.
The mild-mannered Southgate was a midfielder during
his Crystal Palace days, but Southgate truly came to
the fore when switched to defence. Southgate won his
first England cap while at Aston Villa, but it his
Riverside renaissance that threw him back into the
international picture.
