Macbeth
In-Class Writing Assignment #1

Complete one of the following questions. Responses should be atleast one page, and should be written in proper essay format (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion). The value of each question is 20 marks.

  1. In Act 5, we see Lady Macbeth slowly descending into madness. She has developed a pattern of sleepwalking, vigorously washing her hands, and scribbling onto pieces of paper which she locks away soon after. Imagine you are Lady Macbeth. What are you writing on the paper?
  2. References to darkness/night, blood, sleep, nightmares, and unnatural occurrences are dominate in Macbeth. Discuss these references and their significance.
  3. Crisis brings about a change in a character. With references to Macbeth, show how he grows in strength as he loses his humanity, and how Lady Macbeth is driven into insanity by her guilt.

  1. Supernatural events play a prominent role in Macbeth. Discuss the supernatural- the witches' predictions, the floating dagger, Banquo's ghost, and the apparitions- on Macbeth's deterioration.
  2. "Shakespeare's women are no mere slaves or subordinates. They are characters in their own right; they influence the plot; they have dreams and ambitions; they are capable of sin and guilt, as well as joy and love; they, like the men, can become tragic figures." With specific reference to scenes and events in the play, discuss how much of this is true for Lady Macbeth.

  1. Shakespeare not only presents the actions of characters, but helps us see what motivates characters to act in the way they do. Discuss the factors which motivate Macbeth to behave in the way that he does.
  2. "The proper subject of tragedy," it has been said, "is the downfall of one who is possessed of noble qualities and attainments, but who through weakness or defeat in character gives way to great temptation or through rashness or folly brings down ruin in his head." Discuss Macbeth as a "proper subject of tragedy." Discuss his strengths, weaknesses, tragic flaw, and outside influences. Use references.
  3. Relationships have a profound effect on the types of people we are. Show how a particular relationship in Macbeth influenced- positively or negatively- the development of one or more of the characters.
