Novel Activity - The Titanic. Submitted by Heather Rendell
The following project ideas were used after studying the novel The Titanic, but can easily be modified to be used with any other novel. Students are to pick one project to do. They may work alone or in groups of no more than three. A holistic scoring rubric should be handed out and discussed with the students. For those students who are working in groups, a component for self and group assessment should be included. Modifications should also be made for groups, to reflect the number of people in the groups.
Value:___________
- Write a narrative poem, a ballad, or a song reflecting the mood, setting, and events of the novel. Display it on a full sheet of Bristol board and illustrate.
- Make a paper doll likeness of two of the characters in the novel. Design at least one costume for each character. Next, write a paragraph commenting on each outfit; tell what the clothing reflects about the character, the historical periods, and events in the novel.
- Make models of three objects or one detailed model that was important in the novel. On a card attached to each model, describe the object and explain why it was important in the novel.
- Complete a series of five drawings that show five of the majour events in the plot of the novel. Display each drawing in chronological order. Write captions for each drawing so that the illustrations could be understood by someone who did not read the novel. These drawings can be displayed in booklet form or on Bristol board.
- Create a board game based on the events and characters in the novel. By playing your game, members of the class should learn what happened in the novel. Your game must include the following: a game board, a rule sheet with clear directions, and events and characters from the story on cards or on the game board itself. Place the game, instructions, and pieces in an appropriate box or container. Also, you may wish to create a computer game.
- You are a prosecuting attorney putting one of the characters on trial for a crime or misdeed. Prepare your case on paper, giving all your arguments and supporting them with facts from the book. This project will include a presentation of information to the class by all group members.
- Design an advertising campaign to promote the sale of the novel. Include in your campaign a poster and new book jacket. The poster should be three dimensional, colorful, and the information it contains should b e concise. Do not use pen or pencil. The book jacket for the novel should include the title, author and publishing company on the cover. Be sure the picture on the jacket relates to an important aspect of the novel. One the inside flap or on the book jacket, write a paragraph telling about the book, and a paragraph telling about the author. In addition tot he poster and the book jacket, complete a brief television or radio ad.
- Imagine you were a passenger, first, second, or third class, aboard the Titanic and a survivor. Complete a series of five journal entries describing your first few days away aboard the ship. Conclude with entries about your last few hours aboard the Titanic and the days that followed this horrific disaster. The following are some questions you might answer when writing your journal. Be sure to answer some questions of your own. How did you survive? Capture your last few moments aboard the Titanic. Were you in a lifeboat or struggling in the water? How did you feel when you saw the Titanic break apart and sink? Describe the hours before you were rescued. Describe your rescue by the Carpathia and describe the scene aboard the Carpathia after the rescue. How did you feel when you arrived in New York? Describe your reaction to the various newspaper articles about the sinking...
- Research icebergs to learn about their formation, characteristics, and any other pertinent information. Connect the information you find to the sinking of the Titanic. In other words, explain the role of the iceberg in the Titanic disaster. Conclude by describing safety precautions that are in place for mariners today. The presentation of your project can be in the format of a written research paper, a poster, a model, or an oral presentation. It can also be a combination of any of the above. Since this is a research paper (activity), you must provide references and cite sources of information. Please see me if you require assistance in doing this.
- Complete a project on the Titanic that demonstrates the application of computer technology. Such options may include designing a web page or creating a slide show.
The topics listed here are suggestions for possible projects. If you have an idea not mentioned here, please see ne to discuss your possible proposal.
