The Game of English Questions and Answers:

Goal:

Some students have difficulty in formulating relevant questions QUICKLY in class. The goal of this game is to make it EASIER, FASTER and more ENJOYABLE for students to formulate their questions in a class setting.

The class focuses on using a TENSE usage (simple, continuous, perfect, or perfect continuous) and the students focus on a customized VOCABULARY set (WORD cards or list of the words they want to learn)

The game BOARD guides the students thru various COMMON TYPES AND FORMS OF QUESTIONS. The game setting provides an enjoyable interactive learning environment.

The questions types and forms are determined by the square you land on.

They can be WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHO, WHY, HOW types using CAN/COULD, WILL/WOULD, SHALL/SHOULD, NEED/ MUST, MAY/MIGHT, or BE/DO/HAVE forms asked in a POSITIVE or NEGATIVE way.

The question must include the word on the WORD card which is picked up at each move.

If the question is formulated correctly, the students gets to keep the WORD card. The player who collects most WORD cards at the end of the game wins the game.

Instructions:

  1. Chose a TENSE to focus on.

  2. Chose a VOCABULARY SET (a collection of words that students in the class had trouble with).

  3. The student picks a WORD card and throws the dice. EVEN / ODD threw of dice determines if the question is POSITIVE, or NEGATIVE. The students lands on a square and has to formulate an appropriate question with the word he picked.

  4. The other students answer as they wish in a complete sentence.

Example:

Focus of TENSE is PAST CONTINUOUS

Student throws a 2 (POSITIVE QUESTION), picks WORD card “BEAR”, and lands on square 34 (WHO/SHALL/SHOULD).

Suggestions:

Include in your sentence a phrase that highlights the time. For example:

  1. Start like you would normally start a question. For example: I would like to ask you a question please. What do you think. “WHO/WHAT/WHEN/WHERE/... ... COULD/WOULD/SHOULD/.. ..doing/having/being/making.. ...TODAY??? Example: Do you know who could be cooking at such a late hour now? or Do you know who he could be cooking for tonight?

  2. If stuck, use a tag question. Positive statement with a negative tag question (ie. He is/does/will/can! ...... isn't/doesn't/won't/can't he?) or Negative statement with a positive tag question (ei. You are not/don't/won't/can't! .... are/do/will/can you?) Example: He will go today, won't he?, Won't he go today? Example: He couldn't be cooking now, could he! could he be cooking now? or He could be lost now, couldn't he! Couldn't he be lost?
