FRANKENSTEIN THEME ASSIGNMENT

You will be assigned to groups to trace a theme throughout Frankenstein. As you read, you will need to take notes (on a separate sheet of paper) on your theme. You will also need to go back over what you’ve read and look for your theme. You will be finding examples of the theme and thinking about what they reveal about the novel. After we finish Frankenstein, each group will present to the class and distribute a handout. The project will be worth 100 points (a test grade) and will have the following components:

Your notes—30 points. Each member of the group will be graded individually on his/her notes. You should be taking notes as you read, including quotations from the book and your own thoughts about what those quotations show. Notes may be typed or handwritten. They should be at least a full page (handwritten).

Group presentation—40 points. At least two people from the group will need to talk to the class for 3-5 minutes about your group’s findings. Because everyone in the group gets the same grade, all members of the group must work together on the presentation, even if not everyone speaks in front of the class. Your grade will be based on content (what you say) and delivery (how you say it). Be sure that presenters speak clearly and stand up straight. You may or may not include visuals, such as a poster.

Class handout—30 points. The day before your presentation, your group must give a typed handout to Ms. Thompson for photocopying. Your handout must contain a 5-8 sentence summary of your group’s findings, as well as at least 3 brief quotations from the book (with page numbers) that illustrate your theme. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but make sure it’s proofread! Everyone in the group will receive the same grade for the handout.
