ODYSSEY ACTING PROJECT

Think back to the updated script you wrote for the first book of the Odyssey.  Your new project is not only a rewrite of the Odyssey, but also an acting project!

Together with your group, your job is to rewrite your assigned book (or books) into script form.  You should update the language while maintaining the ideas in the book.  In addition, you should condense the books somewhat, with your ending script being about three to four pages in length.  Feel free to add a narrator as you see fit, but try to put as many of the ideas into dialogue as you can.

Each group must:

1.  Have a written script (final draft) that may be used during the performance but will also be handed in for a group grade.

2.  Write a brief synopsis/summary of the scene to be read to the class prior to the performance.  This summary is important because it allows the class to be familiar with the story and plot, which is necessary for the comprehension and enjoyment of the performance.  Any groups choosing to plagiarize from an existing study guide will receive a zero on the project.

3.  Assign roles to every group member.

4.  Stick closely to the plot and characterization that exists in each book.  You are reconstructing the language, NOT the characters and plot.

5.  Use your class time wisely.

6.  Cooperate and work together.  Remember, this is to help you better understand the Odyssey.

Books to be acted:

1.  Book 9:  The Cyclops

2.  Book 10:  Circe

3.  Book 12:  Scylla and Charybdis / The Cattle of the Sun

4.  Books 21, 22, and 23:  The Contest of the Bow/ Vengeance on the Suitors/ Penelope Doubts and Believes (This group must condense the lines a lot and only focus on the main points in each book!)

This project will be worth 100 points (an essay/test grade)!
