From the 44th Engineer Group (Construction) monthly operational reports, here are some of the charts, diagrams, maps and project photos on "The Road" between Sattahip, the deep water port and the "Northeast" where the war was being waged against Laos and North Vietnam via Nakhon Phanom R.T.A.F.B. and Udorn R.T.A.F.B., Hqs for the CIA and the Secret War in Laos.

To get a better perspective of the region of S.E.A., click on this map of Thailand with Sattahip circled.   "Isaan" country or the Northeast may be described as the region of Thailand from Korat, in the central plain over towards Cambodia and Ubon up to Nong Khai and Nakon Phanom.   Nong Khai is on the Mekong River, just below the capital city of Laos, Vientiane.   My wife was from Vientiane and in 1977 became a 4-year refugee in the camp at Nong Khai and then a short 6-month period in the Phillipines...

The 44th had two battalions of engineers, the 809th working in the Northeast (primarily) and the 538th on the portion in the south from the deep water port at Sattahip taking "The Road" up pass (bypass) Bangkok through Korat and Camp Friendship army base up, up, up to Khon Khaen and span off towards Nakhon Phanom (NKP) via two routes:   22 & 223.   The R.T.A. (Royal Thai Army) had a battalion, the 23rd, involved in this major undertaking to link, a "triangle," Udorn with NKP and Khon Khaen...   Route 22 is a more direct route between Udorn and NKP and Route 223 provided fast transport between the supply channels in the south via Khon Khaen.   Click here, for a unit location diagram and here for yet another chart with route numbers...
