WEEK 16: INDUCTION MOTOR: GENERAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Guidelines For Induction Motor Design

1. Fill up the design sheet appropriately. All final values should be in their final forms, i.e., multiple of 1/8", rounded-off, proper decimal places, or whichever applies to each particular item. All dimensions should be in English system, except where noted.

2. Format per item should follow:

Item No.: / Description

Item No.: 01. Number of Poles, p

Formula Used:

Formula: [ p = 120f / N ]

Assumption Made:

Assuming 60Hz

Presentation should be in chronological order, from Item No. 01 to 145.

3. Draw the following:
a. Slot Dimensions, see Fig. 131, page 289.
b. Circle Diagram, see Fig. 147, page 327. Use graphing paper.
c. Equivalent Circuit Diagram, see Fig. 149, page 332.
d. Characteristic Curves, see Fig. 150, page 333.

4. Complete the Table of Calculations, see pages 334-335, for different conditions:
a. 50% of Full Load Slip
b. 75% of Full Load Slip
c. 100% of Full Load Slip
d. 120% of Full Load Slip

5. In estimating values of curves, use Fig. 49 and 67 and the Table of Motor Characteristics instead of the power factor and efficiency curves. Observe all permissible limites, especially:
a. specific loading, qFINAL,
b. average, core and tooth densities, B", and
c. current densities, D, for the stator, rotor, and end ring copper.
