WEEK 03: GENERATION: ALTERNATE SOURCES

Generation Systems

Alternate Sources are unconventional sources of power currently under development which tap energy sources other than fossil and nuclear fission fuels and due to the reduced availability of hydroelectric power sites. It also include other physical and chemical means of deriving electric power from new or improved materials, reactions, and conversion schemes.

Classifications

A. From Earth-Bound Sources.
. a. Subsurface (geothermal)
b. Surface (wind, wave)

B. From the Sun.
. a. Solar Power Source / Collectors
b. Photovoltaic Converters

C. Alternative Conversion.
. 1. Physical Means
. a. Magnetohydrodynamics
b. Nuclear Fusion
c. Thermoelectricity / Thermionics
d. Refused-Driven or Biomass
. 2. Chemical Means
. a. Batteries
b. Fuel Cells

Energy Storage Methods Energy is stored in order to match energy supply with demand and/or to contain it for transport where it can be used. Energy can be stored mechanically, electrically, chemically, or thermally. For more details, refer to this page.

Classifications

1. Rechargeable Battery
2. Pumped Hydro
3. CAES
4. Flywheel
5. Magnetic Storage
