His travel writing is much better than this, but this was still one of the best science books I've read in a long time. Simply because Bill Bryson isn't a scientist or a science writer. Scientists and science writers get too wrapped up in explaining to the reader how vast our knowledge of the universe is. Bryson wasn't afraid to explain that there's a lot we still don't know. There's a lot that just doesn't make sense. There's even conflicting information. It was a refreshing take on a lot of that stuff. He came to science as a neutral bystander, and remained so.
