I read this book so fast I hardly remember any of it. That's not to say it was bad. But it's not what won Steinbeck that Nobel Prize.

Steinbeck writes about a California that I respect and long for, but which I fear is gone. This is not the California of Sideways, which I disrespect. This is also not the California of Charles Bukowski, which I respect but fear. This is the California my dad was born in, in 1943. This is the California of the Low song (click on "California" when you get there). This is the California of Jack Kerouac. I like that California.
