I liked The Hiawatha better. This reminded me too much of House Made Of Dawn too much, which is remarkable, because I don't remember anything about that book at all.
There's a blurry line between The Fantastical (One Hundred Years Of Solitude, Big Fish, Shoeless Joe) and The Confusing (this).
To the interested reader: definitely track down The Hiawatha first.
