The damp English setting of this was unfortunate for me, because although I loved it enormously, I was on Kauai, Hawaii when I read it. As a result my memories of this are colored with the lush vivid scenery around me on that tropical island. I did a lot of reading out on the lanai, with the Pacific breeze blowing in. Also a little reading on the beach.
The primness of the narrator's voice and the bleak orderly British world presented here was a lot of contrast with my surroundings, but I'm pretty sure I liked this a lot on its own. Well executed. I have to admit I remember pulling this off the shelf at the library because the author's name was Japanese and I was hoping to read something from that nation. Turns out it was British and that was pretty good too. Very enjoyable.
