Something that's easy to forget about Hunter Thompson, in light of the fact that he was such an intense personality, is that he was also a really good writer. In the 21st century pretty much all anyone remembers about the man was the drugs. And the suicide. People my age only know about Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, or worse, only know about the movie.
The Rum Diary was good. It's kind of puzzling that he couldn't get anyone to publish it until after he had established his reputation. But things were different in the 1950s, I suppose. You had to be quite a known talent before a publisher would let you use four-letter words.
