INTRODUCTIONNorwegian is the native language of four million people in Norway. If you speak Norwegian you will be able to make yourself understood in the other Scandinavian languages, especially Danish.This cassette course has been prepared to furnish you with the basic phrases you will need to communicate in Norwegian -- what you wish to say and what you can expect in reply. The phrases you will hear on these cassettes will enable you to make yourself understood and help you to establish communication so that you can explain what you want, find your way about and make friends while you are in Norway. The phrases, which are short, easy to repeat and to memorize, are those that Norwegian people use many times each day. The number of words and phrases employed in everyday conversation is surprisingly small, and the vocabulary of this course includes and stresses these. Your repetition of these key phrases will give you an instinctive grasp of Norwegian sentence structure. It will help you to make your own sentences as you learn new words. You will discover that simply by listening, reading and repeating Norwegian sounds you will get a head start in speaking modern idiomatic Norwegian. After a brief introduction by Charles Berlitz, the well-known author and linguist, you will hear phrases in English immediately translated into Norwegian, repeated twice, and followed by a pause. During the pause, say the Norwegian words aloud. Remember, you can always stop the cassette and replay any phrase you feel unsure about. You must repeat the words and phrases as often as possible. Speak the words aloud many times to impress them on your memory. The Norwegian phrases on the audio-tape are spoken at normal conversational speed, as you will hear them spoken by Norwegian people. Practice speaking at the same speed in order to be understood. It has been proved by testing that a word spoken ten to twenty times will impress itself on the conscious mind more readily than a word that is read fifty to one hundred times. When the two systems are combined, as in this course, you will be surprised at the ease with which you will acquire a whole new vocabulary. After reading the introduction, notice that on page 1 the English phrase is on the left and the equivalent Norwegian phrase is on the right. The printed Norwegian phrases may also be used to point out what you want to say. This course of study offers the practice needed to pronounce other Norwegian words you will learn during conversation with Norwegian friends or from listening to Norwegian radio programs, or read in magazines, newspapers, or on signs. In Norwegian, certain parkes over or through the letters affect pronounciation. As you hear the correct pronunciation of these letters on the cassettes, try to imitate them exactly as you hear them. We suggest that you play these cassettes not only at a special study time, but also at different times during the day, even when you are doing something else -- getting dressed, having breakfast or taking a coffee break, cleaning the house, sipping cocktails, ignoring a TV commercial, or in bed before going to sleep. Each time you listen to and practice saying the phrases aloud, the language will become easier. Eventually the phrases will become part of your normal vocabulary. SOCIAL CUSTOMS AND POLITE EXPRESSIONSThe Norwegian words and phrases you have listened to on the cassettes and practiced saying can be varied to express all kinds of different meanings. Now you will be able to get along quite well in Norwegian, using the phrases you have learned in set patterns, without having to worry about grammar or sentence construction. Besides these necessary words, however there are other words -- polite expressions and phrases -- that, spoken at the right time, will indicate that you know something about Norwegian culture. These are the "extra words" that Norwegians constantly use -- that will stamp you as someone who understands and respects the social customs of the country. Use these extra words and the Norwegians will think of you as polite, charming or as they say in Norwegian, Sympatisk. To acknowledge an introduction it is sufficient simply to say, "Good day" -- God dag. "How are you?" is Hvordan står det til? and the reply is "Very well, thank you -- and you?" -- Bare bra, takk -- og De da? When you leave a person you have just met you say, "It was a pleasure to meet you" -- Det var hyggelig å treffe Dem. Don't forget to shake hands when greeting or leaving people. Norwegians shake hands very often in business and social life. If you know a person's family and you wish to send them your regards, say, "Best regards to your family" -- (Hils hilsener till) Deres familie; "...to your wife" -- ...Deres kone; "...to your husband" -- ...Deres mann. When someone does you a service, besides saying, "Thanks" -- Takk, or "A thousand thanks" -- Tusen takk, you might add, "It is very nice of you" -- Det er veldig snilt av Dem. If you are invited somewhere, accept by saying, "Thanks for the invitation" -- Takk for invitasjonen. When visiting someone's home you will hear, "Come in" -- Kom inn, and "Please sit down" -- Venligst sitt ned. To admire someone's home, say "Such a beautiful house" -- For et nydelig hus. If you meet your host's young children, you can exclaim, "You have charming children" -- For noen søtt barn. When you are invited to dinner, compliment your hostess by saying, "It's really good!" -- Veldig godt! When dinner is finished, as he gets up from the table, the guest says, "Thanks for the food" -- Takk for maten, to which the host or hostess replies, "You are welcome" -- Velbekomme.* When you leave your friend's house, remember to say, "Thanks for a pleasant evening" -- Takk for en hyggelig aften. [* Only used for food]. You should be ready to admire buildings, monuments, scenery and so on with remarks like, "It's wonderful" -- Det er flott. "Very interesting" -- Veldig interresant or "It is fantastic!" -- Dette er fantastisk! If you step in front of someone, or must crowd into a seat next to a person, beg their pardon by saying, Unnskyld. At a restaurant, call the waiter by saying, Unnskyld Kellner! Be sure to try the delicious Norwegian open sandwiches. You can ask for them by saying, Har De snitter? eller Har De smörbröd? When you pay the bill and the waiter says Takk you should reply, "You are welcome" -- Vær så god. When having a drink with a Norwegian friend say, Skål. When a friend is going to a party or some other entertainment, say, "Have a good time" -- Ha det morsomt. "Have a good trip" is God reise, and "Good luck" is Lykke til. Certain idiomatic expressions can be used as formal greetings, such as, "How goes it?" -- Hvordan går det? The reply might be, "Not so bad" -- Ikke så verst. "What's new?" is Hva er nytt? "What's happening?" or "What's going on?" is Hva foregår? and "Good-bye" is Farvel or, more informally, Adjø, da. Norwegian belongs to the same language group as English, German, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, and several others. You will find, as you learn more and more Norwegian, that there are hundreds of words that are almost the same as English. All you have to do is get used to the Norwegian pronunciation and different spelling. Listen to and read the following words and see how easy it is to recognize them. This time we will not give their English meanings but will pause after each word to give you time to repeat the word in Norwegian.
