"Fire, Fire"
Captain Archer
Starship Enterprise
1000 hours

Archer made his way to the bridge as soon as he felt the ship drop out of warp. It either meant something was wrong...or something was wrong.

"What's going on?" he asked his Sub-Commander T'Pol evenly.

"Our sensors discovered a distress signal," she said flatly, her usual tone.

"Where's it coming from?"

"A class 4 planet..."

"Sir, I'm bringing it into view now," Mayweather interrupted.

The Captain nodded his head and like almost everyone in the room, felt a little pull at his heart when the planet came into view… it almost looked like home.

"The atmosphere contains 85% nitrogen, 15% oxygen, and various trace elements, it seems quite capable of sustaining life."

"Bioscan?" Archer asked absently his eyes never wavering from the huge planet.

"Various vegetation and small bioforms. Larger ones are also being picked up...but they seem to be weak."

"What does that mean...weak?" he turned to the Vulcan Science Officer.

"The creatures are in stress, most likely dying," she replied without emotion.

"Can we get a closer view?" Archer turned back to the vidscreen.

"Aye sir," Mayweather replied.

A closer image of the planet appeared momentarily in view.

"What's all that...smoke...is it?" Archer squinted his eyes.

"There are fires burning along the eastern edge of this particular land formation," T'Pol said, "this is where the distress signal is originating from."

Archer thought for a moment. What had happened?

"Trip, prepare a shuttle, we're going down to take a look," Archer said finally.

"Perhaps we should observe the situation from here. We do not know what caused all the fires," T'Pol, ever the logical one intervened.

"You can observe the situation from here," he smiled gently, but firmly in her direction, "we'll take a look from down there. Hoshi?"

"Yes, Captain," the young woman answered.

"Call in Callaghan, we may be able to use her expertise with this one."

"Aye, sir," she replied evenly tapping at the console in front of her.
