Chouji's whole family, the Akimichi Clan, have gotten made fun of for their weight. It is true, none of them are skinny, least of all Chouji, who was always the chubby kid in class. However, his size gives him considerable strength, especially when combined with his family's secret technique, Baika no Jutsu, which allows them to increase their size. It has several variations. Chouji's favorite is to make himself into a huge round ball, and then roll at his enemies, crushing them underneath. He can also increase the size of certain parts of his body alone, making a giant hand or foot to crush his enemies. The supreme version of this technique allows Chouji to grow into a giant, standing as tall as a building, although he can only use this with the aid of his family's secret food pills.
Although shy and sensitive due to his weight, Chouji is a stalwart friend, especially to Shikamaru, who he has been best friends with since early childhood. He proved himself dependable during the search for Sasuke, when he fought one of the deadly Sound Five and won by using his family's secret food pills. These pills increased his power more than a hundredfold, but cost dearly, as they sped up his metabolism so much he consumed much of his body's own tissue and nearly died. He managed to pull through with the aid of Tsunade, although now he is not quite as chubby as he used to be. He would rather sit down to a good meal than fight, but don't call him fat: that really gets him mad. Generally, he's friendly to everyone he meets, if a bit introverted, and is respected by his peers for his emerging abilities.
