| Sasuke is one of the two last survivors of the formerly great Uchiha clan. His life started out well. He was the son of the head of the clan, which was very prestigious in Konoha. He was also extraordinarily talented as a ninja... second only to his older brother, Itachi. Things all changed for Sasuke one day, however, when his brother went on a homocidal rampage and killed every other member of their clan. Sasuke returned home to find the entire clan slaughtered, and his older brother standing over the just-killed bodies of his own parents. When asked why, Itachi responded that he did it to "test his capacity". He left Sasuke alive, telling him that he was "not worth killing", but someday, when "your eyes are like mine" he should seek Itachi out and face him again. He was reffering to his possession of the Mangkeyou Sharingan, the highest level of the Sharingan Bloodline Limit which the Uchiha Clan possessed. Itachi wants Sasuke to achieve the Mangekyou, which carries the heavy burden of murdering your closest friend as a prerequisite to attaining it. His reasons for this are unclear. After this event, Sasuke become understandably bitter and morose. He dedicated his life to becoming powerful enough to find and kill Itachi and avenge his clan. He graduated top in his class from the Konoha Ninja Academy, and was teamed with Naruto (worse in class) and Sakura. As time wore on, he became closer to them, but also began to realize that he was not as powerful as he could be: Naruto was surpassing him in many ways. |
| During the Chuunin Exam, Sasuke had an encounter with Orochimaru. The evil leader of the Sound Village wanted Sasuke's body as the next vessel for his spirit, and in order to lure Sasuke to his side, he marked him with the Tenfuuin, or the Cursed Seal of Heaven. This seal would give great power to the user, but at the cost of his free will, for he would have to be trained by Orochimaru in how to use it, or it would kill him. Sasuke had the Seal suppressed by Kakashi, but it was only a temporary measure. For a time, things went on as normal. Sasuke, although viewing Naruto as a brother, began to become more and more jealous of his teammates continually improving power. This climaxed when Itachi returned to Konoha, but after Naruto (because of the Kyuubi sealed within him.) Sasuke faced Itachi, and was pitifully defeated. Realizing he had nowhere near the power needed to attain his life's goal of revenge, Sasuke made a decision. |
| He decided that revenge was more important than friendship and honor. He betrayed Konoha and left to join Orochimaru, convinced that the Heaven Seal was the only way he would become powerful enough to defeat Itachi. He was willing to give up his free will, even his body, to Orochimaru as long as he was able to kill Itachi. Naruto wouldn't let this go, however, and with a team of friends chased Sasuke. Naruto alone caught up to him, and an epic battle ensued in which Sasuke unleashed the full power of the Heaven Seal and was pitted against the power of the Kyuubi. In the end, Sasuke walked away the victor, but he spared Naruto's life in defiance of his brother's wishes. "I will find my own road to power." He vowed to himself as he walked off into the forest, leaving his old life behind, preparing to serve evil in order to vanquish evil. He has not been seen since. |
