M.C. Mehta vs Union of India SCC 471, 1988 :-

In this case the Supreme Court ordered under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution for the closure of the tanneries of Jajman near Kanpur which polluted the Ganga river. It was observed that notwithstanding the provisions contained in the Water Act, 1974, and the Environment Protection Act, 1986, no effective steps have been taken by the Government to stop the grave public nuisance caused by the tanneries at Jajman.
