In this case the Supreme Court observed that Article 21 of the Indian Constitution guarantees the fundamental right to life and personal liberty to include the right to a wholesome environment . So the Supreme Court ordered the closure of certain lime stone quarries being worked out in Dehradun on the ground that they were serious defeciencies regarding safety about hazards in them and the work was likely to affect the ecology of the area. A large scale pollution was found to have been caused by the quarries adversely affecting the safety and health of the people of the region.
