The Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991 :-
This Act has been enacted to provide public liability insurance for the purpose of providing immediate relief to the persons affected by accident occuring while handling any hazardous substance and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
Important provisions of this Act :-
1. Section 3 states about the liability to give relief in certain cases on principle of no fault.
2. Section 7A states about the establishment of Environment Relief Fund.
3. Section 14 - 17 pescribes the penalties. Punishment provided with imprisonment for not less than one year & six months but which may extend to six years or with fine which shall not be less than 1 lakh rupees or with both.
