Adult Ministries of The Wesleyan Church exists to inspire and encourage every adult to become more like Jesus Christ,

leading a daily Holy Life focusing on our Heads, Hearts, Hands and Habits.

January 2008: In this issue...

Are You Set Apart for Life?
SetApart 2007 was AWESOME! The International Wesleyan Youth Convention held over Christmastime had a major impact on thousands of lives in The Wesleyan Church. The theme of the convention was to come away from our four days together and make choices for God that would live out a holy life on a daily basis. Over 1,600 middle and high school students alone made that decision. Other themes under the holy living banner of the convention dealt with serving the world and sexual purity. It was a great time of focus on and commitment to Jesus. Remember, today's high schoolers are quickly becoming tomorrow's adults.
And we need to continue to improve our adult ministries. Ministry is not just for children and youth. While there is no competition between the three, the fact remains; no one has arrived in their spiritual walk yet. We all must keep growing toward and learning from Christ. Matthew Kelley recently wrote these words about holy living. The great confusion that is torturing the Church and weakening our faith surrounds one question; What is holiness? The falling attendance at church, the marginalization of the Church by our secular culture, and our failure to reach the youth are all caused by our inability to communicated clearly the answer to this question, What is holiness? Modern men and women have simply become disoriented. We have lost our way. By putting aside the goal of the Christian life; the call to holiness; we have lost sight of the great Spiritual North Star. The North Star is the only star in the sky that never moves it remains constant, unwavering, and therefore is truly a guide. If we are to find our way, we must rediscover the great Spiritual North Star.

Ministry for Men
The following is an excerpt from A Look in the Mirror, by Patrick Morley.
Why can't we ever sustain momentum in our men's ministry? Whenever we seem to create some good momentum, it inevitably peters out.
"Sustainability" easily ranks as the #1 challenge to men's ministry. Many churches even entire denominations - have become an albatross around the pastor's neck. Guess what? It doesn't have to be that way.
Here are a number of strategies to help you sustain momentum. These ideas will not seem like "a magic wand." Plenty of ideas will help you win a sprint, but these ideas will help you go the distance. Remember, you need long term sustainability because it takes a long time to make a disciple.
1. All-Inclusive: Change your church's perception of men's ministry: Which ministries get the most resources? The ones perceived to produce the greatest impact. Redefine "men's ministry." How many men do you have in your church? Count them. That's the size of your men's ministry! Help your pastors, elders, deacons, and program directors understand that if you have 100 men, then the size of your men's ministry = 100.
Think big! Your men's ministry is probably much bigger than your church leadership has been thinking. Don't think of your men's ministry as a small group of your most committed men. Six men meeting on Wednesday morning at 6:30 a.m. does not a men's ministry make. Men's ministry is "everything we do in our church that affects men." Have a plan to disciple every willing man in the church - ushers, parkers, choir, Sunday school teachers, elders, deacons and pew warmers - right where they are.
"All-inclusive" men's ministry is a whole new worldview, so you will have to hammer away. But, once your leadership sees the possibilities of discipling all your men into leaders, there will be no turning back.
Next month we'll look at another challenge.

Marriage & Family
The page has turned on another New Year and with it has come new beginnings for the Wesleyan Church and the couples in it's surrounding communities. Recently, the Wesleyan denomination recognized Worldwide Marriage Encounter as a vital ministry for strengthening marriages. As a result, Worldwide Marriage Encounter has provided an individual license for a Wesleyan Expression. This ministry is designed to strengthen relationships with the tools necessary for good communication and greater intimacy.
The weekend format features one Wesleyan Pastoral couple and two lay couples presenting "Talks". These talks include topics such as: Self, Listening, Areas for Reaching Out, Marriage as a Covenant and Making Our Relationship a Priority. The talks generate questions that the couples respond to individually and then share together as a couple privately. It has been a revolutionizing weekend for many couples, especially those that have been challenged to find the quality time needed to maintain a godly relationship. God has called us all to have a relationship that demonstrates Christ's love relationship with the church (Ephesians 5:21-33). Our desire for the ministry is to equip married Christians to be fruitful married couples that demonstrate Christ's love to others. It is one of the few weekend outlines that enables participants to practice these communication skills during presentations. It is also the combined effort of presenters, outline and participation that God uses to make positive changes in marriage relationships. God has something special in store for Pastors on these weekends too.
We invite you to learn more about this ministry at www.wwme.org or www.mewesleyan.org. If you are interested in hosting a weekend in your area, please contact us soon. We look forward to new locations and dates in 2008.

Is the Wii for Me??
Just yesterday I was browsing a senior adult newsletter and then last night on a national evening news segment the Wii popped up. The stories tied the Wii to senior adults.
Wii is one of those numerous electronic game systems on the market. Wii according the Nintendo Wii web site is stated simply "fun."
My introduction to Wii was via our 28 year old son who of course has a Wii. He has been an electronic gamer since his childhood. During Christmas Ray Jr. told me one of the games he bought was for us 60 year olds. I thought to myself how nice. He demonstrated bowling, skeeball and also mentioned tennis. Now I must admit I'm not good at those wiz bang instant response games. I thought is Wii for me!
Little did I realize how Wii was going to catch on with our group - 55+ adults. It seems that our son was right on with his interest in us and what Wii had to offer.
Now back to the magazine and news program. Wii is really catching on with our group. Yes Wii simply stated is fun and it even offers some mental stimulation and a very light physical workout. So next time you are visiting your children or grandchildren check out the Wii. I guess Wii is from me and thee.
Sue and I are looking forward to seeing you at the Great Smokey Mountains Gathering April (click here for more information) and/or at General Conference in June. (click here for more information).

Five Compelling Reasons for Disciple Group
5 Compelling Reasons for Disciple Groups - Reason #5
Reason #5 ~ Spiritual Growth
A recent survey of over 20,000 believers revealed those who are engaged in a small group on a regular basis are 70% more likely to say they are growing spiritually than those who just attend a weekend worship service. If you are familiar with Acts 2 this statistic probably didn't surprise you. The church began with thousands of young converts who desperately needed a place to grow and be transformed. In answer to this great need, home groups came into being.
A healthy small group is more than a place for studying Scripture and learning together...it is a place where Truth meets life and transformation takes place. It is a place to ask questions about God—a place for asking questions that keep us on the path of Holiness. God's plan is for us to be transformed via these little faith communities.
Over the last few months, we've looked at five compelling reasons for Disciple Groups. If you haven't already, let me encourage you to give groups a try...transformation is waiting!
