Fiery Fall Festival Frenzy
Hosted by Enzan Shi Deragonray
Shayniie looked at the assembled riders below her with a feeling of pride.
She had organized all of this.
She, Shayniie of Shintaru Hold, now Senior Rurachi of Enzan Shi.
Wordlessly, she led them from the core of their fortress to a lake a quarter mark's - hour's - walk away.
There, her people had brought pillows and blankets for the riders and placed them in the numerous grottos surrounding the lake.
The lake was a large thing, stretching to the horizon no matter which side you stood on.
Plently large enough for the hundred or so dragons of the Festival's Frenzy.
The sun sat easily over the horizon, shimmering in its late afternoon glory.
The riders standing around her were falling into their dragon's mind as they waited.
Even Shayniie was prey to such and soon succumbed to mind-melding with her bronze Akyoth.
---
Akyoth flexed her wings slightly and hissed at Arlanyth, making the much smaller Light green back away again.
She smirked slightly and looked up at the sky again.
She would begin this Frenzy.
And she would end it.
Her entire being quivered with the pent up energy she longed to release in bursting into the sky.
Good. she stated to herself, her eyes whirling excitedly,
The time draws near.
Oh, she's a philosopher, now. white Lanthirth chuckled, his tail flicking calmly.
He was rather small for a dragon, smaller than most of his clutchmates.
Smaller than the greens in the Frenzy.
Not smart to anger the Senior Rurachi. brown Haeth advised his eyes whirling with mirth.
Don't call me that! Akyoth snapped,
It makes me sound old!
Electric-marked red Cyilonith laughed at that,
As old as your mother, mayhap? she offered.
Grandmother. the bronze admitted.
Can't we get this over with? Ryoukith - Arlanyth's bond - asked irritably,
The faster we-
I will begin this flight, green, not you. Akyoth snapped.
Just ignore her, Rye, we'll fly soon. Arlanyth chirped.
The dragons milled around together, talking in groups about the Frenzy and who they would fly or be flown by.
Then, when the sun had just touched the horizon, Akyoth stood on her hindlegs and bugled.
Instant silence from riders and dragons came and the bronze female opened her wings with a slight crack.
It's time! she announced and launched herself into the air with a powerful leap.
An inferno of colors followed her, dotted by green and brown, as the many females took wing and the males followed suit.
They had all blooded their kills before coming to the lake and they were ready.
Small Light green Arlanyth pivoted on her wing to avoid a collision with Maricth, a full green.
She wove her way through the other females and their chasers, trying to dislodge her sole chaser.
Unfortunately for her, her bondmate knew her better than anyone and anticipated her every move.
So when she dove down towards the treetops, he dove faster and caught her swiftly right above them.
Next time, Ryoukith, I'll fly longer. she told him as they clasped talons.
I know, dearling. he crooned.
Meanwhile, green Lyornath was weaving her way through the crowd, trying to get free.
She planned to have her bond catch her, and only her bond was chasing her.
Or so she thought.
A large brown dropped out of the males chasing after the female bronze onto her.
She was too startled to react and he took advantage of his situation, wrapping his tail around her's.
What? You're not Chreothath! she cried, flailing at him.
The brown dragon chuckled and spread his wings to support them, not even loosening his grip,
Nope, I'm Haeth.
Red Chreothath watched his bond circle down to the ground in the clasp of the brown.
It's a Frenzy. he reminded his bond before wheeling after another female.
Gold Velaeryth swooped towards the setting sun, her hide blending rather well with the golden hue of the splendid star.
A good amount of her chasers winced away from the sun and had their fancies caught by other females, thus veering off to chase them.
One male remained as her chaser after she dove into the golden splendor of the setting sun.
He followed his quarry into the glare, using it to shield his approach also.
He found her rather quickly by following the currents in the air that she had left behind.
When he reached the gold, she welcomed him with a croon,
There you are, Pheonith.
One of the odder dragons of the Frenzy flew easily on her wing-arms.
Her bond had not come with her to the Frenzy.
It made her sad that her rider had not come to watch her.
I feel so alone... Andethaxeuth muttered to herself as she coasted along.
You are not as alone as you believe, red Charnath told her,
My bond did not come, either.
The yellow Rys-Hathian looked back at him quizzically before putting more speed into her wingbeats.
He was too close.
She felt him near, almost close enough to catch her.
She tucked her wings to her body and barrel-rolled to the left.
He anticipated such a move and caught her when she was belly-up.
They rolled until Charnath spread his wings and let them glide together.
Fiery red-orange-yellow Unovoqueruseth spun around gold Eoth as she led her small flight on.
In the confusion of the near-collision with the smaller dragon, the Queen spread her wings and braked.
One of her suitors took advantage of this sudden stop, catching his mate and helping her stop.
Bronze Mazdath looked his mate over for any scratches as soon as Unovoqueruseth had passed.
Another male took advantage of the confusion to move up and catch his fiery prize.
Ilsakeuth and Unovoqueruseth were a splendid sight of red, orange, yellow, green and white as they fell entwined.
Eoth and Unovoqueruseth were not the only females to be caught in a near collision.
Bronze Akyoth, white Karith, amber Kalionth and cranberry Caelestith all flew towards the same nearby peak.
They all flew up, skimming its sides then darted horizontally across the more or less flat top.
They then found themselves tangled in eachother's males.
Yellow Xerbith had ducked under the other males to pass them only to catch Caelestith in his talons as she sped right into him.
Two small whites found themselves unable to tell wing from wing, foot from foot, until Lanthirth managed to entwine his neck and tail with Karith's,
Sorry. he said timidly, referring to the crash.
Brown-bronze Yseth ensnared bronze Akyoth before the larger female could respond, though he did get an earful about having to decide which female to chase and stick with it on their way to the ground.
Kalionth managed to brake somewhat before colliding with morning sunset Rankareth, who clasped her in his talons with ease.
Green Maricth had clearer skies than the others.
However, she was beginning to tire.
This flight had been longer than most green flights and she was tiring horribly.
Just as her wings faltered for the last time, red Tagmetath lent his wings to her and they glid down gently together.
Autumn Akith flew across the lake's surface, creating ripples in her wake.
She pretended to fly upwards once, making red Adalath go soaring past her and into orange-white Amoureth.
The next time she flew up, red Chreothath caught her by surprise and carried her into the sky with his swoop's momentum.
Akith squirmed slightly in the larger dragon's grasp for a moment, then accepted her fate.
The number of unpartnered females was few, the males slightly more.
Those that were still in flight were beginning to tire, and now the males made their moves.
The most colorful dragon in the Frenzy, iridescent sunset rainbow starry Kovphaleiryth, had been watching another pair of dragons fly by and was caught by a sneaky Ewerth.
The pair the Raug-born dragon had been watching found themselves entwined now, as Kelssyroth slowed from fatigue and large Felinruad caught her.
Kelssyroth was happy, her rider was with another feline-kin.
Felinruad crooned happily, his genetics might be passed on.
Red-orange-black Radianth swooped into a dive as a final attempt to dodge her chasers, only to have Everesth dive faster than her and catch her before they hit the ground.
Electric-marked red Cyilonith tried a similar move to rid herself of the last of the males only to be envelopped by sunset Mikioth.
Gold Nijaith gave her chasers a mighty show.
She zipped across the skies, dodging the peaks and losing some chasers with sheer determination.
However, determination was not enough to rid herself of twilight red Athlukeith who stayed right behind her until she could fly no more.
Then he caught her and helped her go to the ground, where they stayed and rested.
As these last pairings were made, the sky emptied.
Greens Arlanyth and Ryoukith parted then called it a day thus returning to their quarters.
With them went Rys-Hathian Andethaxeuth and red Charnath, brown-bronze Yseth, green Maricth, dappled Kelssyroth, twilight red Athlukeith, cranberry Caelestith, orange-tones Amoureth and Radianth and red Adalath.
The others all returned to the skies, except for green Lyornath who decided to rest a while before returning.
Bronze Akyoth had barely lifted off the ground after her tryst with Yseth when amber-gold Keranath swept her into the air.
She glared at him, then softened,
You should really warn people before you do that. she teased.
Unovoqueruseth managed to fly into clear air-space this time, before yellow Xerbith caught up to her.
The red-orange-yellow tried to escape him, yet he twined his neck around her tightly and refused to let go.
So ended both their Festival flying, as they parted and landed.
