The Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ghana which was began in 1847 by missionaries from Germany and was initially a vibrant church until the early 1960's. From the early 1960's through the mid-70's, the church which was initially established on strong biblical foundations by the founding fathers went through a period of spiritual decline. In 1977, the Bible Study and Prayer Group (later, Fellowship), a predominantly lay movement was began as an organ for reviving the church. The establishment of this group resulted in tremendous spiritual awakening and growth. In early 80's there was a change of leadership in the church. The Moderator elected then, after a few years in office began to introduce a heretical theology into church, and in order to entrench himself to propound his theology, he caused the church's constitution to be changed clandestinely. The mandatory two terms of four years each for the Moderator was changed to "as long as he (the Moderator) is capable". His actions brought a very big confusion into the E.P. Church. The crisis came to a head in 1991 with the liberals' strong opposition to renewal. The result was the emergence of two churches form the original Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ghana. That which emerged with the renewal group is the Global Evangelical Church .
At its inception, the Global Evangelical Church started with less than 80 congregations, doubling by 1993. In 1994, the church launched an evangelistic and church planting drive and by the end of 1996, had over 450 congregations. As at the last Synod in August 2000, the church had on record 650 congregations with a total membership of 86,500. New churches are being planted continually.
