Home World: Thelka IV - originally a Federation Colony world on the edge of Cardassian space, now annexed by the Cardassian Empire under the agreement with the Federation of 2366.
Personal History: Little is known, other than he is a skilled engineer, having amassed experience in the standard M-A/M, and fusion reaction drive systems, warp field mechanics, sub-space field propagation and sub-space particle physics. His business on Thelka IV was as a consultant to the major ship repair yards, both on & off world. His business was quite profitable up until a civil rebellion against the Cardassian governors in 2393. At this time, it is understood his parents, wife & and; two young boys, were killed in a Cardassian 'pay-back' police action in retaliation for civil disobedience which Retarin was thought to have been a part of. At the time of the uprising, Retarin was actually off world, consulting to the Berellian Hegemony on upgrades to their merchant fleet. He returned to find his entire family murdered, and promptly disappeared from public life. Retarin is known to have been a part of the Defence Forces of his world, although to what extent is unknown.
Following the murder of his family, Retarin left Thelka IV, having departed suddenly in company with several other members of the defence forces under threat of execution by the Cardassians. His aim was to linkup with the Maquis.
Retarin spent some little time seeking out the Maquis, only to meet up with a trader/smuggler named Cassandra Stevens who befriended him and became his lover. Retarin & Stevens set up a home for themselves on a forested moon - Endor. The two had two children, boys, named Darrick & Darien. Retarin joined Starfleet in 2397 as Chief Engineer on the USS Endeavour, a post he filled for some six months before becoming restless, and missing his family. He returned to Endor for a time, but, unable to cure his restlessness, he and Stevens parted company in early 2398 and he has been conducting various business ventures since.
In late 2397, Retarin met up with a Felidian,Reb'el mot'Hathor,and the two became fast friends. They were bonded together for life on SD239807.11 in a touching ceremony on the oceans edge of Felidia III. Reb'El took Retarins name to become Reb'El mot'Hathor Retarin. The two are known to have applied to immigrate to the Trillistra Colony with a view to expanding on the Felidian's botanic expertise, and for Retarin to re-establish his trade as an expert starship engineer. It is believed that Retarin is in some way connected with a Starfleet Secret Service officer, General Verenyan B'eutrainien
Nothing else of any great consequence is known at this time, save for the origin of the nickname, Needle. Retarin is a very precise person, intolerant of fools and normally very direct. He is a peaceful man, but is believed to have been responsible for several gruesome displays of vengeance on Thelka IV prior to his flight. He is very pointed in his opinions, and has earned his nickname. He tends to live only for the day, not concentrating overly much on any possible future actions.
