1A.    THE WORD OF GOD  [Box]

Sefer Torah                - a scroll used in the synagogue where Jews gather for worship.

            Books of Moses        - contains five books; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy (first five books of the Holy Bible)

            Rabbis                        - men that devote  their lives to the study and interpretation of the Torah.

            Talmud                       - the commentaries alongside the text of the Torah, that bring interpretations & life to the words.

            Word of God              - is the Torah and the Sefer Torah is a symbol of the living God.

            Trees of Life              - are two wooden poles with handles that the Sefer Torah are rolled in.

            Holy Ark                      - a cupboard where the scrolls of the Torah are kept.

            Aron Hakodesh         - Hebrew, the written language of the Torah.

            A Yad                          - is a pointer to read the Torah which is used to avoid touching it.

Tenakh                       - this word comes from the three Hebrew letters for Torah, Nevrim and Ketuvim. These are the five books of Moses,    the Prophets and the Writings.

Holy Bible                   - this is what the Tenakh is sometimes called.

 

 

2A. KEEPING THE COVENANT

 

            Tallit                - is a prayer shawl

            Tephilin           - are two small boxes with leather straps that contain parchments with passages from the Torah. One is wrapped around

the left arm and the other is fixed on the forehead.

Kosher            - the name for the kinds of meat Jews can eat according to the commandments of God. They are animals with cloven hooves and which chew “cud” and only domesticated fowl. The meat must be clean and free from blood. They are forbidden to eat shell fish and fish without fins and scales. Milk and meat products are kept separate and a time lapse between eating meat and milk is necessary. They use separate cutlery and china for each one.

Prayers           - There are two kinds; formal and informal. The formal prayers are said at certain times and are often psalms or hymns from the scriptures. Informal prayers are of happiness, thanks, forgiveness, for help and guidance. Some prayers can even be made up for the moment. People remember God, keep his commandments and communicate with him in their everyday lives.

 

THINGS TO DO: Get a Bible and open to the book of Leviticus, chapter 11. Learn more about God’s commandments for food.
