If ever a work of art symbolized Gandhi's principal of dynamic nonviolence, this not-so-little piggy is it. A joint project of EarthSave Cincinnati (a chapter of EarthSave International ) and Farm Sanctuary , "Ahimsa" is a pig with a purpose...to demonstrate the beauty of compassion in a world where empathy all too often takes a back seat to enterprise.
The "Big Pig Gig" is the city of Cincinnati's celebration of its heritage as "Pigopolis"...a city that owes its current status to the killing of animals -- particularly pigs -- for profit. As part of the celebration, the city offered fiberglass pigs for sale to local charities. The idea was that the pigs would be decorated by local artists and displayed throughout the city. At the end of the festival, they would be auctioned off, with the proceeds to benefit the participating charities.
Faced with such a celebration, many vegetarian/animal rights groups would have protested loudly...possibly even violently. EarthSave Cincinnati and Farm Sanctuary, however, decided to take a different approach. An approach that embodied the spirit of ahimsa.
That's right...they bought and decorated
a pig.

Hand painted by Cincinnati artist and EarthSave member Mary Ann Lederer, the appropriately named "Ahimsa" makes an eloquent and beautiful statement for compassion.
Imagine Ahimsa on your front lawn...or perhaps in your local city park! It can happen! On November 1, 2000, the Cincinnati pigs will be sold at auction. This is your chance to own or donate a beautiful, original work of art that speaks to your spirit of compassion and non-violence toward ALL living beings, while providing needed support to two deserving, pro-animal charities.
