Adoption Procedures

Witch Trot Farms endeavors to do its best in all aspects to truly rescue horses. We feel a truly rescued horse is one that will NOT need rescuing again. In line with that have made every effort to make sure that both the adopter and adoptee are both happy. People speak of inanimate cars as having personalities. Living things, such as horses, truly have lots of distinct personalities, just like children. So for a horse to be adopted, more than monetary consideration is involved. So hold on to your wallets and purses and see what we mean.

Like any relationship, personalities are an important part. Respect and understanding all also vital. How can you tell if a horse in a field will respond to you as it should. How can you tell if you need to understand a particular horses needs if you look over a fence? You can't! That's why, through years of experience, we have worked up quite a good approach to solving that problem. You'll be more sure of your new horse, or horses, before you buy than anywhere else.

Before buying, we will talk with you and find out just what you are looking for. They for show? Will children be riding? You love long trail rides? Need them to pull a cart? We want to know! Do you feel that if tying yourself down to the saddle didn't look silly you'd do it? Or are you the type that laughs at saddle users as wimps and can ride anything with four legs? Well good for you! But whatever your skill level, when we think we have some good choices for you, you'll get to come down and ride them yourself three times, so we know you and the horse are matched.

Sounds like a commitment? It is. But like kids, you'll to proud of them. They will be a joy to own. Also, not wanting to place a horse in a situation requiring rescuing again, we want to make sure new owners understand that a large animal like a horse costs money to take care of. A good safety amount to expect as a minimum cost is $600 a year per horse. To make sure that people realize that, we require you to sign some statement to the effect that you have the funds available to care for the horse.

Lastly, to ensure the conditions of the horse are adequate, we require a few pictures of the horses house and horse fence. We discourage invisible fencing-like wire without flagging or boards as horses don't see all that well to begin with and in a panic barely see at all. They need to bump into something solid to know that it's there. Barbed wire is OUT. We also require the name and phone number of the vet and farrier. This is more to make sure that the adopters know these people and that they will be available to help this horse. All horses need shelter in the winter and anytime the rain is colder than 60 degrees. They would like a blanket when it's really cold (that's about $100 for a reasonable one).

If you plan on riding, as most people do, a reasonable set of tack runs $150 for English and $350 for Western, although used equipment is available for both for less.

In return, we guarantee each horse unconditionally for 6 months after the sale. Baring sickness and injury, we will take back every horse that we sell. We really want the horses to find great new owners and vice versa.

Thats it! Yes, its a little work, but when would you like to be sure you made the right choice? After?
