The theif is probably the most similar character to the Fighter, they both have reasonable attacks, and decent defense, although the theif is weaker, it has the "steal" ability which can hurtle them up levels and I know one person who if they get attacked for a lot of experiance, turns around and steals twice as much back from them and ends up winning. Atan's Thief Guide: Highly recommended read. Very deep and gets right into character.
