| Mythology: | Son of the Amazon Queen Antiope and Theseus. His stepmother Phaedra, after being rejected by Hippolytus, falsely accused him of raping her and then hanged herself. Believing her lies, Theseus begged his father, Poseidon, to avenge him. Thus, when Hippolytus was driving his chariot by the shore, Poseidon sent a white bull that, when emerging from the sea, frightened the horses that dragged Hippolytus to his death. Artemis, enraged when learning this, begged Asclepius to bring him back to life, and then changed Hippolytus name to Virbio (twice a man) and took him to her sacred grove in the Italian Aricia, where he married the nymph Egeria with the Goddess' consent. |
