When the Greek ships were held by contrary winds due to Artemis' anger against Agammenomn, who had killed one of her sacred stags and boasted that was a better hunter than she was, Calcante sentenced that the Goddess would let them pass only if Iphigeneia was sacrificed to her. But during the sacrifice, Artemis surrounded Iphigeneia in a cloud and replaced her for a deer, taking the girl with her to Tauride, where Iphigeneia served the Goddess as her High Priestess, tending to the sacrifices in her honour.
